The mission of the School Resource Officer Program is to focus on the prevention of juvenile delinquency through frequent contacts with students and through programs specifically developed to respond to those factors and conditions, which give rise to delinquency.
The program also provides for recognition of pre-delinquent behavior in students and for their referral to the appropriate agency or school personnel for assistance when it becomes apparent that these pre-delinquent students have social, economic, or psychological problems which might result in dependency, delinquency, or violent behavior.
Furthermore, the primary functions of the School Resource Officer (SRO) Division are to:
• Provide educational information both in and out of the classroom on various topics, such as drug and alcohol abuse, gang violence, traffic safety, suicide prevention, law enforcement as a career, family violence, child abuse, and other topics critical to youth in the community.
• Recognize and reduce delinquency-producing influences on youth at school.
• Counsel with students, parents, and school staff to resolve problems or misunderstandings in order to reduce the possibility of criminal activity and violence at school.
