Mission Statement
The Mission Statement of the Public Works Department is provide the highest
quality of service possible to all citizen(s); to enable the City of Greenville to
grow and recognize its leadership position in the Delta, foster an atmosphere of
teamwork where the individual worth of each employee is recognized, harmony
exists, and we represent the City and Council in a positive manner.
Between October 1 2006 and September 31, 2007 the Public Works Department provided the following services, we repaired 836 water leaks, responded to 1502 sewer calls, picked up 11,774 cubic yards of rubbish, removed 7,748 tires from ditches and rights of way, cleaned 438 drainage ditch segments, picked up 3,328 appliances, flushed 130 fire hydrants in response to 96 water quality complaints. We treated 3,484,000,000 gallons of waste water achieving an average 96% efficiency with no excursions in our permit. We worked a number of street repairs including concrete repairs.
A number of changes were undertaken this period including the suspension of incentive pay within the Sanitation Division. The Public Works Administration Division and Water/Sewer Maintenance Division with the help of W.L. Burle Engineers, P.A. brought a Pilot Test with Orica Watercare to Greenville to validate a new treatment method for removing Volatile Organic Compounds in our drinking water. Or in English to take the color out. This pilot test ran for four weeks and was used to develop data for the design of an Ionization type treatment. The department also started a process of recycling rubbilized concrete into base material. This process reduces our cost for base material by 50%, and reduces our waste stream. We have connected our division supervisors so they may receive work requests more efficiently and eventually have access to infrastructure maps in the field.

The Public Works Department continued with some popular and effective programs for this period, including our MDOT Litter Truck that picks up litter along U.S. Highway 82, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, and Broadway. We continue sweeping our streets on a monthly cycle.
The department distributed approximately 30 recycle containers at all the schools in Greenville, public and private. This the result of a grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. This program will reduce the waste stream from the schools by more than 50% and divert the cardboard and office paper back into the production of new paper products.

The Public Works Department started utilizing asphalt millings as surfacing on our inventory of gravel roads and alleys this year. This was tried out in a few selected areas and was found to e very effective. This process eliminates the need for expensive crushed limestone while producing a surface that takes compaction very well.
The department was notified of a grant from the Mississippi Delta Empowerment Zone Alliance for the renovation of the water system at the Mid Delta Regional Airport. This $363,000 grant is funding the replacement of the water well pumps, and the renovation of the 500,000 gallon 1941 vintage elevated storage tank. This project is slated for completion by October 2008.
